grounding: 3-3-3 rule.
This week’s Grounding Exercise is known as a Sensory Awareness practice .. the power of this exercise is that it invites you to ground through your senses.
When you consciously engage with any of the primary senses (sight, touch, hearing, taste, smell) you can quite effectively shift away from the chaotic-thinking-mind, to arrive in the simplicity and spaciousness of the present moment - which is incredibly grounding.
Who is thinking about their tax returns when smelling a bush of traditional roses in full bloom?
The 3-3-3 Rule
Practice the 3-3-3 rule every day .. so it's ready when needed. The power of these practices comes from the ‘doing’, not just the reading!
* Pause what you are doing, close your eyes for a moment, and take a long, slow, deep breath.
* Open your eyes and look around you - name three things you see.
"I see a bird walking across the lawn in front of me. I see the wind moving through the trees along the pathway. I see a puffy white cloud about to move across the sun."
* Then, name three sounds you hear. Close your eyes if you feel comfortable to do so, to heighten your awareness of the many sounds that exist around you.
"I hear ... a lawnmower in the distance, a plane in the sky above me, maybe a bird or animal pecking the dry leaves in the bush behind me."
* Finally, name three body parts and mentally describe to yourself, how you are moving them in that moment.
"I am shrugging my tight shoulders (wow, they are tight), I am releasing and expanding my belly a little more with each inhalation (gosh that feels nice), and I am rolling my ankles (left and then right ankle) in space."
* Smile.
